Let's be honest. Have you ever seen a team working their asses off, shipping code like crazy, but you just know, deep down, they're running in circles? Everyone's busy, everyone looks productive on their status reports, but the needle isn't moving on what really matters. It feels like they're building blindfolded.
I know that feeling because I've walked into those situations. 15+ years leading product, scaling platforms past $25M ARR for millions of users. I’ve seen the beautifully designed slide decks with the carefully crafted "Product Vision" statement. And then I've seen the reality: scattered teams, reactive decisions, missed opportunities, burned out talent. That disconnect? It’s where companies bleed cash and potential.

Here’s the raw truth nobody tells you in those fancy workshops: Your vision statement is probably useless. Not because the words are wrong. But because it's treated like wallpaper. Something you put up once and then ignore. It lacks the teeth, the conviction, the daily relevance to actually guide decisions when things get tough.
Real product vision isn't a sentence. It's the operating system for your team's focus. It's the unwavering answer to WHY are we pouring our lives into this? It's the strategic filter that protects you from the endless stream of "good ideas" that derail great execution.

After coaching over 50 PMs and navigating this as a Principal PM, I stopped relying on workshops alone. I built a way to make vision real, actionable, and unavoidable. Forget the checklist you saw somewhere. Focus on these non negotiables:
Excavate the REAL "Why" (Go Deeper than $$): Everyone says "start with why". But most stop at the surface. Revenue? Market share? Fine. But why that? What fundamental human pain are you erasing? Who specifically wins when you deliver? What change are you making? Mini Case: One team I advised was stuck building generic features. We dug deep and found their real why wasn't just 'more engagement,' it was 'give busy parents back 30 minutes a day.' Boom. Priorities snapped into focus, execution accelerated 30%. Your 'Why' needs that kind of specific, human core.
Map the ACTUAL Landscape (Eyes Wide Open): Vision built in a bubble bursts on contact with reality. You need the wide angle view. What are the real market shifts? What are users actually struggling with (not just saying)? Where are competitors sleeping? What tech is about to change the game? Stop relying on assumptions. Get outside the building. Understand the whole messy picture.
Make it STICK (Short, Memorable, Repeated): If your vision statement needs a paragraph to explain, it's already failed. It needs to be concise. Memorable. Something you can repeat constantly. In standups. In 1:1s. In code reviews. Connect daily work back to it. Vision locked in a document is dead. It needs to be hammered home until it's part of the team's muscle memory.
Focus on the USER (Beyond Lip Service): Yes, "focus on users" is obvious. But are you really? Are you digging into their unspoken needs? Are you solving the problems they can't articulate yet? Or are you just building what the loudest customer (or stakeholder) demanded this week? Real user focus means deep empathy and the guts to prioritize their win.
Spark BELIEF & ACTION (Inspire & Involve): Vision needs to move people. It needs to feel possible, exciting. This isn't just about rah rah speeches. It’s about your unwavering conviction as a leader, especially when things get hard. It's also about involving your team. Get their fingerprints on the how, even if the where is set. Shared ownership builds belief.

This is the difference between managing a project and leading a mission. It’s the messy, human work behind the clean checklist. It's building clarity that allows your team to execute with confidence and speed.
Stop letting your vision be wallpaper. Make it the heartbeat of your team.
I built my career as a Purpose Driven Architect helping leaders navigate this. Building the vision, then the systems to make it reality. It’s about creating legacies, not just features.

Is your product vision wallpaper or a weapon right now? Hit reply: What's ONE WORD that describes your team's clarity on the vision today? (e.g., Sharp, Foggy, Improving, Nonexistent?)
